The weather around the country in the last month is a great reason why you should not feed your fish at the first sign of spring. March weather fluctuates so much that it is more important than ever to not do anything for your fish until the water is over 50 degrees, and even then, stick to cold water food.
When temps are cooler, fish metabolism slows so having an easily digestible protein is important. Cold water food contains wheat germ which is very easily digestible for fish. We recommend using cold water fish food until your pond water is consistently 60 degrees or more.
Fish may come up ready to be fed but hold steady and wait. The most important thing to remember– fish are hardy. They live in the lakes and rivers just fine. Just let nature run its course and we’ll get to spring – eventually.
