A well-designed pond deters mosquitoes by preventing stagnant water, which they prefer for breeding. Backyard ponds with constant water movement, such as from skimmers, waterfalls, or streams, are less attractive to mosquitoes.

Furthermore, any mosquito larvae that do hatch are either drawn into the skimmer or consumed by fish. If your pond lacks a skimmer or fish, installing a pump and fountain combination can create enough water movement to discourage mosquito activity.
